Compulsive behaviours and habits are negative behaviours and patterns that may interfere with a person’s ability to live a happy, healthy and fulfilled life.
Behind most compulsive behaviour and substance abuse is trauma, and often the person is unaware of their trauma. Unaware that their behaviour is a limiting coping strategy because they’ve been doing it for so long it’s ingrained and invisible. Dependency on sugar, alcohol, coffee or other drugs, as well as gambling, phones, texting, sex or shopping. Most of these are burdens to people and often harshly judged by others. Socially acceptable obsessive behaviour to work, power and material gain are often perceived as virtues or strengths and favourably judged. Still, all are negative and have consequences.
